His mother was of English and Irish descent, and his father's background was Cree. His parents were involved in missionary work in northern Manitoba, but the family moved to Winnipeg when Kent was two years old. He graduated from Sheridan College (Ontario) with a degree in illustration, and worked in theatre as a set and costume designer.
