I had the chance to watch this film at a screening that showed low-bu shorts from all around the world at my local theater. And I have to say that out of the 20+ films that I watched, this was the only one that stayed in my head, at least enough to come here to check it out. Even when the low budget element is quite present, I would say that it even gives it an edge, because of the nature of the film. It narrates a the story of a delusional young woman who arrives home after giving birth to find out that the father is gone; he leaves a letter saying that he will come back that sets the mood for her growing obsession and delusion. But everything gets more complicated when the child grows up and we figure out that he has a severe autism and doesn't even speak, he only draws, eats and gets upset when things don't go his way. A sweet middle age lady (it's not said but we understand that is their neighbor) takes care of the kid while the mother goes to work . We witness 4 moments of their lives that shows us the routine in which they live, the growth and slight development of the kid and the decadence and evolved madness of the mother. All in all it is certainly a very low budget film from a starting writer/director who has apparently worked on 2 other projects (it would be interesting to see what they are like or if he is still making films). But his use of pattern repetition, silence, noises and music, static frames and unsettling hand-held camera decisions make up for a quite disturbing but touching ride. I personally really liked the fact that the film starts losing its colors till it becomes completely black and white but not some other color oriented effects that are a bit distracting. The acting is mostly good (some beginners mistakes here and there). The main kid is apparently the older brother of Asa Butterfield the boy from Scorsese's Hugo. At the end of the day, the movie made me think, made me feel, made me uncomfortable, made me mad, made me glad. Isn't it what movies are about?
