"Changing Patterns" is a failed television pilot that was shown on "CBS Summer Playhouse"...a show devoted to showing such pilots. Perhaps the network did this to recoup the costs associated with making them...or perhaps they wanted to see what the public thought of the shows in order to give them a second chance. Either way, no additional episodes of this show were made.
When the show began, I already hated the show. You see a man making a smoothie...and you hear the laugh track going off even though he's JUST MAKING A $^%# smoothie! Later, someone tastes it and comments that it's delicious and once again the laugh track goes off...leaving you to wonder WHAT is so funny. The obvious answer is nothing...and I can only assume they misused the laugh track because they thought the show wasn't funny. Did it get any better? Well, the laugh track certainly didn't get a lot better...and once again it made it SOUND like the show was the funniest show ever made. It's a shame, as it really didn't need the laugh track at all.
The story is about two housewives, Maxine and Molly (Brenda Vaccaro and Valerie Perrine), who are trying to make it in the fashion industry. It looks like the pair finally have gotten a break when a buyer shows interest in the products. But to help sell the deal, Maxine realizes the buyer is interested in Molly and Maxine makes it seem as if Molly is single and available! What's next?
The show wasn't bad...the laugh track sure was. But I do seriously wonder if the show wasn't picked up because of the laugh track AND because the show wasn't all that funny. It wasn't bad....just not especially funny.
