A novelist blackmails his now married ex-girlfriend into having an affair with him.

During World War I, young Frenchwoman Francine D'Espard meets U.S. Army officer William Holliday at the front, and they become engaged. Returning to America, William finds his father at the mercy of his business rival, Ezekiel Bates. Shortly after, when Francine arrives in America to marry her fiancé, she is informed that her lover is about to marry Bates' daughter Susan. Her love now turning to hate, Francine devotes herself to the task of destroying her former suitor. Through her connections with the U.S. Secret Service, the two are involved in many adventures, and just as Francine is about to avenge herself, she discovers that Holliday has been true to her the whole time. Upon finding evidence that Bates, in addition to being the cause of all their troubles, has also defrauded the government, Francine has him arrested and finally reunites with her lover.

When Mark Reid, a young man seeking his fortune in the gold fields of California, discovers Mike O'Hara attempting to jump his claim, he becomes violent. However, the Good Samaritan intervenes and prevents him from injuring O'Hara, Reid, ashamed of his behavior, offers his adversary a share in the mine. Hearing of their good fortune, Morrison, a promoter from San Francisco, makes the partners an offer they cannot refuse. Reid goes to San Francisco to conclude the deal; while there he meets Morrison's niece Barbara and the two fall in love. Morrison learns of their engagement just as he is about to strip Reid of his profits in a bogus stock deal. The news fails to deter him and Reid loses all his possessions, believing that Barbara was an accomplice in her uncle's scheme. Returning to the gold fields, Reid discovers that O'Hara has staked another successful claim and the two men renew their partnership. Reid rises in the financial world and is about to crush Morrison, when the Good Samaritan intervenes once again, bringing Barbara to Reid's house where his better instincts prevail.

When Mary Graham's old school chum visits, Mary's husband becomes infatuated with his wife's guest and soon openly avows his love for her. Mary is powerless to stop the affair and confides to old friend James Livingston the expected arrival of their child. Hiding her pregnancy from her husband, Mary goes to the country, where her son is born. Learning that Robert is intent upon filing for divorce, Livingston demands that the unfaithful husband repay some notes which Livingston holds. Robert is unable to pay, and Helen threatens to leave him. In contrast, Mary offers to sell her jewels to help her husband, forcing Robert to realize her true worth. He begs his wife's forgiveness, and they are joyfully united as Mary proudly introduces her husband to their son.

Rex Radcliffe, vice president of the Northern Atlantic Railroad, is opposed by company president William Harding in his desire to put over a deal that would jeopardize the stockholders of the Interstate Railroad. Using thought control, he causes Weer, Harding's discharged secretary, to murder his ex-boss. Weer is arrested for the murder. Radcliffe then puts Harding's daughter, Helen, also under his influence. John Bonham, Interstate president, becomes interested in the case, and with the aid of Mrs. Weer he exposes Radcliffe, who then commits suicide.
