Doctor of Technical Sciences, prof. Mirkin Boris Grigorievich.

Theme: Network fragmentation and beliefs about COVID-19 in Russian towns
Speaker: Boris Vladimirovich Pavlenko (HSE)

Annotation:
In this paper a relationship between spreading of true and fake statements regarding COVID-19 and network’s fragmentation of Russian towns is estimated. It is hypothesized that higher fragmentation in towns (more lies within communities rather than between communities) leads to creation of echo-chambers which decrease efficiency of information transmission. The data used for this study combines a town-level poll from 2020 and VK network’s structure. Paper shows that fragmentation is associated with knowledge and believing in information about COVID-19 differently for fake and true statements.
