Description

Lorax Trail starts up a rocky climb right out of the parking lot. Soon enough though, the trail's true character presents itself. The rocks give way to a smooth dirt surface and winding trail through the pinion juniper canopy. While the trail remains most often smooth, there are some tight turns (blind turns so listen for oncoming traffic) and a few steeper ups and downs.
1.5 miles from the trailhead, you'll encounter the upper or lower short loop option shown on the map. At the north, upper elevation end of this loop, the trail continues south, but you must navigate a range fence.

The trail becomes steeper and rockier as it approaches the southern point where many folks turn around to head back to the trailhead. The turn-around point is somewhat nondescript, but obvious once the trail feels more like an uphill gully drainage than a trail. Continuing from this point, South Lorax is a primitive route that will connect you to BLM Road 8275.

Distant views are not high on the list of features but hiking the trail as an out-and-back makes for an enjoyable time in the forest.
