The Mattole River estuary in 1942. Riparian vegetation appears as dark patches and strips on the light gravel bar. The mouth was open when this photo was taken. Although the flow was not low, the wetted channel is narrow in some places. Photo provided by the Mattole Restoration Council.

The Mattole River Estuary in 1965. Riparian vegetation is rare along the wetted channel. The wetted channel is wide and braided. At the time of this photo, the mouth was closed and some relative depths of the lagoon are evident. Photo provided by the Mattole Restoration Council.
