A large genus of beautiful adephagous Coleoptera, or carnivorous beetles, of the family Carabidæ. C. sycophanta, about an inch in length, is the largest and handsomest British insect of the family. C.inquisitor, C. scrutator, and C. calidum are other species of this widely distributed genus, commonly called ground-beetles. Also spelled Callisoma.
