  1. (n) Brutus
A former mode of dressing the hair, in which it was brushed back from the forehead, and worn at first in disorder, afterward in close curls. The style seems to have originated in Paris at the time of the Revolution (1793–94), when it was the fashion to imitate the contemporary conception of Roman antiquity. As transplanted to England, the style lasted longer than in France. The word is now used for a lock of hair brushed upward and backward from the forehead.
