Brutus
A former mode of dressing the hair, in which it was brushed back from the forehead, and worn at first in disorder, afterward in close curls. The style seems to have originated in Paris at the time of the Revolution (1793–94), when it was the fashion to imitate the contemporary conception of Roman antiquity. As transplanted to England, the style lasted longer than in France. The word is now used for a lock of hair brushed upward and backward from the forehead.

O Brutus! voller tiefen Sorgen
Seh ich dein Herz fuer Rom zerteilt.
O Freund! noch einen freien Morgen,
So hat die Knechtschaft uns ereilt.
Du? deinem Freunde? Brutus! Goetter!
Rom steht, wenn Brutus Brutus ist.
Schon war ein Brutus Roms Erretter;
Komm! zeige, dass du beide bist.
Wenn Caesar Rom will unterdruecken,
Muss Brutus ihn zur Strafe ziehn.
Ich will den Dolch ins Herz ihm druecken:
Mit Zittern zwar, doch drueck ich ihn.
Brooding on hours misspent,
To see the spectre of Despair
Come to our lonely tent;
Like Brutus, 'midst his slumbering host,
Summoned to die by Caesar's ghost.
Of the lures that enthrall unenticed;
The names that exalt and transmute us;
The blood-bright splendour of Brutus,
The snow-bright splendour of Christ.
