Introduction:
This textbook consists of eight chapters, containing training exercises and practical examples. Rather than scales and arpeggios in isolation, the training section includes various combinations and patterns that will help in developing a jazz-like approach. These exercises can be considered as source material for developing your own ad-lib phrases.
Chapters 1, 6 and 7 are given for the purpose of training. Chapter 1 is compulsory and is most useful for beginners; chapters 6 and 7 are useful for advanced learners. Chapter 2, 3, 4 and 5 contain examples of practical jazz phrases. These phrases are not taken literally from a particular jazz pianist, but rather include well-known patterns typical of the bebop and post-bebop eras.
Furthermore, rather than collect one phrase after another and enumerate idioms meaninglessly, these parts are made up of just the examples that you
