    About a Man - Popfoy

    CHAPTER 1

Angie was sobbing, out of control, pushing and pulling his body. ‘Wake up you bastard! Wake up!’ Eddie lay at the side of the road. My God she thought, 999, she dialed on her mobile. Not waiting for the woman on the other end to finish, she shouted. ‘My husband, he’s been hit by a car, he’s not moving. Hurry please… . Oh, yes… , I’m not sure. We’re in Sandiway Village, near a church… . St John the Evangelist… . You do? Thank God. Hurry please.’ She looked down at her Eddie who had won the title European strongman in London two weeks ago and was now lying unconscious.

The car, which had hit him, missed Angie. She remembered, being thrown out of the way and then got angry with him. ‘If you die on me, I’ll never speak to you again. Don’t you dare die on me you big lump? Eddie, stay with me love, stay…’ Looking up, she cried. ‘God I’ve never prayed for much in my life. Please don’t let him die.’

A car pulled in to the side of the road. Two women get out and ran to her side. ‘What happened?’

‘It just veered off the road, a car. It hit him and the bastard just carried on. I’m Angie. This is my husband Eddie.

‘Well Angie I’m a nurse, so is Moira. I’m Dot.’ She knelt. ‘Eddie, Eddie can you hear me? If you can, try to open your eyes. I have a strong pulse and he’s breathing.’ Moira, was phoning for an ambulance.

‘It just came from nowhere,’ said Angie. He pushed me out of the way, he must have. I phoned the ambulance a few minutes ago.’

‘He’s stopped breathing.’ She shoved Angie away and started to give Eddie mouth to mouth, needing to blow very hard.

    ‘Don’t let him die, please?’

After a while, ‘Moira I need a hand.’ panted Dot. ‘Take over please.’ To Angie she said, ‘Stand by the road and watch for the ambulance.’

Reluctantly she did as asked and soon shouted. I can see lights. I can, it’s got to be. Please God.’

Moira, who was working on Eddie, looked to her friend, ‘Dot he’s breathing again, shallow, but he’s still with us. It’s going to be touch and go.’

The ambulance pulled over and the paramedics jumped out.

Looking up, Moira said. ‘He stopped breathing but we managed to pull him back.’

‘How long?’ said the driver, who by now was kneeling beside Eddie.

‘Less than a minute,’ replied Dot.

Tears started to flow freely from Angie as the paramedics placed a mask over his face and started to roll him over, so as to place a board under him.

‘Jesus,’ muttered the man who was trying to move him. ‘Would you help please Miss? I don’t want to disturb him too much. Between three of them they managed to get Eddie safely on to the board and then the stretcher.

On their way in the ambulance, Angie heard the driver answer to a garbled message.

He turned his head and asked his partner Jane, who was closely monitoring Eddie’s condition. ‘How’s he doing?’

‘Everything is stable, he’s holding his own.’

Angie had calmed somewhat but was still muttering. ‘God, I love him such a lot. Please make him OK. He saved me you know. To Jane, she said. ‘Is he… ?’

Jane cut her off. ‘He’s doing very well, Angie, try not to worry too much. We’re nearly there

While Eddie was being looked over by the emergency team, Angie went outside to phone their two children, Ronnie and Mandy.
