A Perfect Tour In Norway
Day 1
Bergen
Fly into Bergen and explore the historic Hanseatic Quarter, Bryggen, then take the Fløibanen funicular railway to Mount Fløyen for gorgeous views. In the evening, sail out of Bergen on the Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage for its northbound journey.
Day 2
Geiranger and Ålesund
Spend the day on board ship admiring the spectacular landscape, including the Geirangerfjord. In the afternoon make a stop and stroll around the Art Deco town of Ålesund, repeatedly voted Norway’s prettiest.
Day 3
Trondheim
Arrive in the medieval city of Trondheim and pay a visit to the Nidaros Cathedral, Scandinavia’s largest, where Norway’s patron saint St Olaf the Holy is buried. For an altogether more worldly pursuit, Trondheim also has excellent shopping.
Day 4
Arctic Circle
Cross the Arctic Circle by ship and arrive at Bodø, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. Take a tour to Saltstraumen, the world’s strongest maelstrom, before continuing on to the Lofoten Islands in the evening, disembarking at Stamsund for a night in a rorbu (fisherman’s cabin).
Day 5
Scenic Å
Take a bus to the tiny community of Å in the very south of the islands, which is worth a visit for its scenic location and its two interesting museums depicting life on the Lofoten Islands in times gone by.
Day 6
Troll Fjord
Continue by bus to Svolvær, the hub of Lofoten, and take a boat trip to the magical Troll Fjord, surrounded by sheer cliffs with magnificent waterfalls. In the evening rejoin the Hurtigruten Coastal Voyage, sailing towards Tromsø.
Day 7
Tromsø
Visit Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic, home to the Arctic Cathedral, the Polar Museum and the Polaria Centre, before sailing on to the far north of Norway.
Days 8–9
North Cape
Passing Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world, stop at Honningsvåg for a few hours’ excursion to otherworldly North Cape, a steep cliff rising 307 metres (1,007ft) from the ocean. Fly back from Kirkenes, the final stop on the Hurtigruten voyage, the following day.
Introduction
The most accurate observation made about Norway is that it is a land of contrasts: majestic mountains tower above mysterious fjords; harsh winters are relieved by often glorious summers; and long polar nights give way to the radiant midnight sun. Norway offers the visitor a beguiling mix of tradition and modern convenience, spectacular nature and city delights.
Land and People
Situated in the northwest corner of Europe, on the Scandinavian peninsula, Norway is bordered by Sweden to the east, Skagerrak, the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west, the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, Finland and Russia to the north. Covering 385,252 sq km (148,747 sq miles) with a latitude ranging from 57° north to 72° north, from south to north, Norway is one of the largest countries in Europe, but has a population of only 5.2 million, or 16 people per sq km (41 per sq mile). The northernmost point of mainland Europe is situated in Norway and one-third of the country lies above the Arctic Circle, including the islands of Jan Mayen, Svalbard and Bear Island (Bjørnøya).
Bear Island
Bear Island, discovered by Dutch explorers Willem Barents and Jacob van Heemskerk in 1596, is now a protected nature reserve.
Large parts of Norway are covered by mountain chains, or high plateaux such as Hardangervidda, the largest in Europe at 11,900 sq km (4,600 sq miles). The coastline mostly consists of fjords, islands, islets and skerries, while the east, bordering Sweden, has large forests and lakes. This leaves only three percent as arable land, and traditionally many Norwegians had to combine farming with fishing to make ends meet and survive the harsh climate. The sea has shaped the land, not just physically, but in creating the nation of Norway, ancient and modern, from the seafaring Vikings, the long-standing trade in fish and fish products and the more recent discovery of oil in the North Sea at the end of the 1960s. Norway is still one of the world’s greatest exporters of fish and seafood, as well as the third-largest supplier of oil.
