In Memory Of
My grandparents…
Percy A. Donatto, my guide and spiritual inspiration.
Margaret L. Donatto, my best friend, and greatest inspiration of love, life, and humbleness.
My love for you both flows through me each and every day.
My life has been full because
Of you. I’ve learned so much about life from you and I carry it with me every day. I pray
That I have made you proud.
Love always,
Quan
Your first Puppy
Acknowledgements
For my parents…
Beverly Donatto, my mom. Words could never describe how much I feel for you! I could never thank you enough for being my source of unconditional love and encouragement. You loved me beyond all my flaws and I will always be your baby girl. You are everything to me and I thank God for blessing me with you.
Waydell and Karen Maxey, my dad and second mom…
Though our paths crossed late in life, I am forever grateful that you have been there supporting me from the first day! Your acceptance and unconditional love is something I will always value. My life forever changed the day I allowed God to open that door. I love you more than you will ever know.
For my children…
Troy Ligon and Maiya Chavis… I could not have completed this without you. Thank you for supporting my dream and pushing me to be better. Thank you for loving me and keeping me grounded. You two are my greatest gifts and accomplishments. My prayer is that you never give up on you dreams and always know… With God ALL THINGS are possible. I love you more that all the words in the world and stars in the sky. And I am forever proud of you!!
For my brothers and sisters…
Shamissa Dickson… No matter where life brings us, you will always be in my heart. I love you and never think anything less. Thank you for always supporting me.
Marcellus Maxey, Waydell Maxey Jr., Shamay Maxey, Shun Cuthbert, Veronica Maxey, Jeremiah Maxey, and Joseph Maxey… Before you came into my life I only dreamed of what it was like to have such an amazing sibling love. The connections we have are all separate in many ways, but extremely important to me. Thank you for loving me the way you do. I love you all so very much. You could never possibly know just how much support and encouragement I have gotten from you all, unbeknownst to you at times.
LaTonya Maxey, though we never got a chance to meet I feel a connection to you through our siblings and our dad. I pray that I meet you on the other shore and embrace as God would have it. I love you without even knowing you.
A very special thank you to my boss and my friend…
Simone Jenkins Spears, you told me that my words needed to be heard. Thank you for pushing me when I never thought my words were anything more than just that… words. Thank you for putting up with my impatience for my own work and believing that this right here could actually happen. Thank you for telling me that I have a story to tell. That story is still being written. Just know your words and encouragement was not in vain. I truly love you for believing in me more than I sometimes believed in myself.
For all of my friends and family… there are entirely TOO MANY to list. I love each one of you. Thank you for being an inspiration when you had no idea you were. Thank you for the laughs and all times spent growing with me through the years. I am totally blessed and grateful for your presence in my life. Cheers to you all.
Preface
I can recall my senior year of high school… My English teacher told us we needed a tablet which would be our daily journal. She said it didn’t matter what we wrote in it as long as we wrote something daily. It could be a thought, a dream, or whatever we experienced that day or days before. I began to write my thoughts. I never imagined my thoughts would be anything anyone would be interested in. She never read our journals because she said it was for our own personal use. My thoughts were many things from feelings, to hopes and dreams, to experiences no one could ever imagine. They would eventually turn into poems that were very personal. But, they were mine. I kept that journal years after high school. I kept writing in it. Unfortunately I lost that journal… never to be found again. I stopped writing for
