About this ebook
I am white, but I have been going to a black church for the last twenty-one years. I have also continued to go to my original white church. Going back and forth between these two very different churches has been an amazing experience, and I have had some very big surprises along the way. But these surprises have to do with things most people are not at all aware of. That's why I had to write about them in this book.

CHAPTER ONE
The Question White People Always Ask Me
I am white, but for the last twenty years I’ve been going to an African American church. I’ve also continued to go frequently to my original white church. Because the service schedules are different, there are many Sundays I’ve gone to both. And in the twenty years I’ve been going to the black church, I’ve probably averaged at least one attendance a week. (For ten years I sang in the Gospel choir.)
My original impetus for going to the black church was the crisis and social unrest stemming from the Rodney King episode. I live in Los Angeles, so the reactions to the beating and the subsequent acquittal were particularly intense. In the midst of all this turmoil I felt a need to do something. We’re either part of the problem or we’re part of the solution. I wanted to be part of the solution. But what could I possibly do? All I had ever done before that was write, and that was mostly comedy (I was a writer for The Monkees,
among other things).
A (white) woman pastor I knew offered to introduce me to a black pastor she knew in
