      CHAPTER 1

      LOGIC

      1.1 STATEMENTS

      A declarative sentence that is either true or false, but not both simultaneously, is called a statement. A simple statement contains one declaration, while a compound statement contains two or more declarations. We shall use lowercase letters to denote simple statements and uppercase letters to denote compound statements.

      Examples:

      a − It is raining.

      A − It is raining and it is dark.

      b − Fire is cold.

      B − Fire is cold and ice is warm.

      A truth table shows relationships between statements. The letters denoting the statements are listed on top of the table, while the letters T, for true, and F, for false, are listed below to show the relationships.

      Example:

      − It is raining.

      − It is not raining.

      A connective is a structure used to connect simple statements together to form a compound statement.

      If x is a statement, then NOT x, or the negation of x, denoted by − x, is false whenever x is true, and true whenever x is false.

      Example:

      x − Jack is home.
