About this ebook

TO LOVE A HOUND”, is a collection of my experiences and memories of having owned and loved a beagle. She was not a pet, but a best friend and in her short six year life, we really lived.
Hounds are a unique breed that can melt your heart and make you tear your hair out at the same time. In the brief time I was blessed to have a beagle as a companion, she proved to me how challenging hounds can be. The sad, cute and sometimes down right hilarious situations we wound up in together make losing her a little easier to take. She was a best friend, confidant and a unique soul. I hope you enjoy reading about her life as much as I enjoyed having her in mine.

    Foreword

Anyone that has ever owned or spent a fair amount of time around a hound dog knows they are a unique breed with a whole new set of challenges in dog ownership. They are head strong, stubborn and always have their noses to the ground. If they are not chasing some small animal or braying at anything that moves, they are digging and getting into whatever their nose can search out.

My favorite hound is the Beagle. They are as cute when they are adults as they are when they are puppies. The big floppy and velvety soft ears paired with their large expressive eyes can melt the coldest heart. I owned one for just over six short years and this is my collection of stories celebrating her life. The funny ones, the stressful ones and the sad ones. She was not a dog, she was my best friend and I miss her terribly.

Cassie, this is my tribute to you.

    Introduction

What does it take to love a hound? Well first you have to have patience. Next tolerance, understanding, dedication and then more patience. Lots more patience. Hounds are a very unique breed. You see them everywhere, doing proud and noble jobs like search and rescue, contraband detection in airports and even cadaver dogs. They are great for that because of their sense of smell that makes them so useful in these fields. Yes dogs all have an extremely heightened sense of smell but hounds have those big floppy ears that help to stir the scents up and intensify it to their noses and lips. This is also why they make such great hunting dogs too. Their heightened sense of smell makes them great for flushing out small game such as rabbit and pheasant. They have even been known to be useful with some larger game as well.

A Beagle’s sense of smell is ranked right up there with that of a Bloodhound and Basset Hound. It is also considered one of the best senses of smell amongst all dog breeds. They are scent hounds and are best utilized at ground scenting rather than air scenting because of their long ears and big lips which helps to pool the scents closer to the nose.

The modern breed of Beagle was developed in Great Britain in the 1800’s and since then has steadily lost popularity in its native home, while gaining more and more popularity in North America. With a life span of 10 to 13 years, Beagles are highly intelligent and have been gaining an incredible amount of popularity as pet choices due to their small to medium size, even temperament and general lack of health problems. They are also known to be great with kids but are prone to separation anxiety because of their large pack nature.

A Beagle’s even temper and gentle disposition make them a very friendly and sociable dog with people and other dog breeds. This unfortunately makes them a poor choice for a guard dog as they can be easily won over by strangers. But Beagles do make an excellent watch dog. Their natural tendency to bark or howl when confronted easily notifies anyone within earshot that something is going on.

Beagles are a high stamina and excitable breed that require regular exercise so they do not gain weight. Their food has to be regulated as well or they will eat whenever food is available and as much as they can. Because of their excitable nature and high stamina they can also be hard to train as they are single minded and very determined. Especially when they have caught the scent of something they find intriguing. While they can be very obedient, they are easily distracted by a good scent and can get bored easily of the training as well.

Because of their instincts and keen sense of smell, having a Beagle as a beloved pet can try your patience even more than the most challenging teenager. I know this because I have had both and I learned more than I ever thought I could from my beloved hound.

I want to capture some of the memories I have of her and with her. This way I never forget and anyone that cares to read them can see and understand why this is so hard for
