Glossary
Foreword
Aquascaping is about world building. The process of creating an aquarium and stocking it with fish engages the aquarist in designing a microcosm of the underwater universe.
We can only visit the real version of that world by breathing oxygen from a tank for a few minutes or by staying safely encased in steel, peering out through tiny portals.
Studies have proven that watching fish swimming in a beautifully designed tank can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and cure insomnia.
There is something hypnotic and other-worldly in the fluid scene playing out on the other side of the glass. The effect of watching fish on humans is so powerful that Alzheimer’s patients eat more and display fewer aggressive physical behaviors when aquariums are placed in their dining area.
For some aquarium enthusiasts, the ultimate goal is owning a home tank large enough to house some species of shark. These magnificent creatures have been kept in public aquariums since the 1860s, but now it is possible for hobbyists to access the level of equipment necessary to successfully keep sharks as pets.
Make no mistake. Keeping a shark in a home tank requires tremendous attention to detail. In this book, we’ll discuss a class of freshwater shark like
fish that, while not true sharks, display the same overall physical appearance as their larger cousins.
Many of these fish are aggressive and even predatory, eating or harassing smaller fish or being so aggressive with one another that only a single member of the species can be kept at a time.

The largest privately-owned reef tank in North America measures 24’ long, 10’ high, and 10’ feet wide (7.31m x 3m x 3m) and holds 20,000 gallons (75,708.2 liters) of water. The enclosure is so massive that volunteer scuba divers help to clean the interior.
The viewing areas are made of 2.5" (6.35 cm) thick acrylic, giving visitors a means to watch the 100-150 fish that live inside.
Some of those specimens are
