    INTRODUCTION

I wrote my first poem in 2009 at the age of 66. I had never written a poem before. Now over 275 poems later, I’m still writing (Go figure!) My motivation? I believe as you read each poem (especially #’s 5 and 22) you will get a sense of why I wrote each poem and an insight into my character (#181) I write how I feel about certain issues and forthcoming about my beliefs. You must judge for yourself your own feelings. And not the feelings of others. I hope you enjoy each poem.

Many poems I still cannot believe I wrote. Others I sometimes questioned, but you can be the judge of that. I guess I am my own worst critic. These poems are not formal. I write like I speak. All my poems are listed on heartremindspoems.com

    "At the touch of love

    Everyone becomes a poet"

    Plato

    The Day is Done

    "Read from some humbler poet,

Where songs gushed from the heart,

As showers from the clouds of summer.

Or tears from the eyelids start"

    ...

"Then read from the treasured volume

    The poem of thy choice

And lend to the rhyme of the poet

    The beauty of thy voice"

    Longfellow

    1807-1882

    SONG OF SOLOMON

"Place me like a seal over your heart,

    Like a seal on your arm;

For love is a strong as death,

Its jealousy unyielding as the grave.

It burns like a blazing fire,

    Like a mighty flame,

    Many waters cannot quench love;

    Rivers cannot wash it away.

If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love,

    It would be utterly scorned."

    Song of Solomon (8:6/7 NIV)

    THE MASTERS

    Love’s Philosophy

"The fountains mingle with the river

And the rivers with the ocean.

The winds of heaven mix forever

    With sweet emotion.

Nothing in the world is single,

All things by a law divide.

In one spirit meet and mingle

    Why not I with thine?"

"See the mountains kiss high heaven

    And the waves clasp one another;

    No sister-flower would be forgiven,

    If it disdained its brother:

And the sunlight clasps the earth,

And the moonbeams kiss the sea,

What is all this sweet work worth,

    If thou kiss not me?"

    -Percy B. Shelly (1792-1822)

    "We look before and after,

And pine for what is not:

    Our sincerest laughter

    With some pain is fraught:

    Our sweetest songs are those

    That tell of saddest thought."

    PERCY BESSHEY SHELLEY

    A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

"Take this kiss upon the brow

And, in parting from you now

    Thus much let me avow

You are not wrong, who deem.

That my days have been a dream

Yet if hope has flown away

In a night or in a day

In a vision or in none

Is it therefore the less gone?

All that we see or seem

Is but a dream within a dream"

    Edgar Allan Poem

    March 31, 1849

    THE BEGINNING

    FIRST POEM 2009 I CAN’T

    HELP REMEMBERING YOU

Memories fade and are soon forgotten

Childhood games are all for naught

    Kick the can,

    Hide and seek,

    Flashlight tag,

    Childhood memories held so dear

    Simply vanish over the years

    Yet still,

    I can’t help remembering you

Friends a lot I used to know

No longer are heard the words Hello

I search but they are never found

Not a trace, not a sound.

    Baseball: second base

    Dances: canteen Friday nites

Rock & roll: lower that sound!

    Relationships; Girls! Girls! Girls!

    Where has it all gone?

    I search for a clue

    Yet still

    I can’t help remembering you

    Discretions of youth, chances taken

Showing no fear until reality wakens

Gypsy girls with olive eyes: $5 a reading

    Money no object

Bluebird Dance Hall: girls in a row, asking for a chance

    10 cents a dance

Trips to the city, girls looking pretty

Meet on the corner, walk upstairs

Names are forgotten, faces won’t do

    Yet still

    I can’t help remembering you.

Responsibilities of manhood, a challenge to meet

Left me in a fog I would not repeat

Raising a family: coaching, band aids, Disneyland, prayers,

One go round is all God gives

    Yet still

    I can’t help remembering you

Now that age has finally caught me

And memories survive only from day to day

The few I cherish I wish to save

Taking them with me to the grave

    Yet still

    I can’t help remembering you.

    Epilogue

    Maybe it’s because you’ve tied

    A string around my heart?

    THE HEART NEVER FORGETS

    "Do not arouse or awakes

    Love

    Until it so desires"

    Song of Solomon (NIV 3:5b)
