Reflect on this question for a few moments: how do you reply when someone asks you, How are you?
How are you?
is a common and straightforward question, but how you respond to it says a lot about how you deal with your emotions.
Do you reply honestly, or do you reply with the standard line, I am fine,
even when you are not?
There are many reasons why people say I am fine
; all of these are related to emotions. Here are some of those reasons:
I am fine,
impresses upon other people that your life is in order. But you must remember that life is not always sunshine and rainbows. There will be stormy days that you have to experience.
People have different ways of coping with the sunshine and storm in their lives. Some prefer to deal with them alone; some would rather be with other people to celebrate or vent and cope with whatever they are faced with.
Regardless of your preference, knowing how you feel and how to act on these feelings, is essential.
Why should I be aware of my emotions?
Not many people give much thought to their feelings and emotions.
Most of us believe that by detaching ourselves from our emotions, we create a safe space for ourselves that is free from hurt.
Sometimes, when we fail to acknowledge what we feel, other people label our emotions for us, despite not fully grasping what we are going through. In that way, they invalidate our experience.
When we realize that people have made incorrect assumptions about our emotions, we tend to develop negative emotions that may grow intense; this is more dangerous.
People tend to refuse to acknowledge their emotions for different reasons. It could be because of a traumatic experience of growing up in a family where feelings are not openly shown or discussed, or perhaps a belief that emotions prevent you from achieving your goals. Ignoring our emotions, for whatever reason, is not healthy at all. It prevents us from living our lives to the fullest.
The first step to effectively managing our emotions is recognizing and validating our emotions. It is not just a habit that you can develop, but a life skill that can help you become a better person.
