For my students, before and after.
The Day After
When you wake up that morning,
I ask that you breathe for me.
Inhale the cold freshness of the morning breeze
Spread your sunshine to all that lives.
When they ask you to dress me,
I ask that you cover me in deep dark blues and night stars.
When they ask you to hug me,
I ask that you carry the best thoughts I could ever have.
When you walk down the parlor,
I pray you don’t shed a tear.
But smile, for I am no longer in pain.
When they ask for you to talk about me,
do not speak of my triumphs;
tell my sadness and fears instead,
Show them not what was seen but what I hid.
When they show up -if they show up,
see me with kindness and love.
See me like I was never able to.
When you love me, if you love me,
please know that I loved you too.
When you
