    ABOUT MARK HYMAN

Mark Adam Hyman is an American physician and author who was born on November 22, 1959. He was a columnist for The Huffington Post and the founder and medical director of The UltraWellness Center. Hyman contributed frequently to the Katie Couric Show up to its 2013 termination. He has a blog called The Doctor's Farmacy where he explores a variety of issues pertaining to the health and welfare of people.

Hyman is an advocate of functional medicine, a contentious branch of complementary medicine with scant scientific support. He serves as the Institute for Functional Medicine's board president for clinical affairs. He served as the journal's editor-in-chief and is currently a contributing editor for Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. Hyman endorses the peganism diet, which some dietitians have labeled a fad.

    DIET

WHAT WE EAT AFFECTS OUR BEHAVIOR?

Hyman says there's no such thing as junk food -simply because there's just junk, and then there's food. Studies done in prisons and juvenile delinquent centers looked at 12 months with 3,000 incarcerated youths, whose junk food was replaced with healthy options.

They got rid of sugary and processed foods. The result? There was a 25% reduction in assaults, a 21% reduction in antisocial behavior, and a 75% reduction in the use of restraints. And get this: despite the fact that suicide is the third leading cause of death, there was a 100 percent decrease in suicides. All
