Sandra Forty is a graduate of London University where she studied medieval and early modern history, including a spell at the Courtauld Institute learning about Renaissance art from Professor Gombrich. Since then she has worked as a journalist in London, then as a book editor and writer. She is the author of a number of books, most on art and architecture. Sandra lives in south Devon with her husband, children and many cats.

Once, images were crucial to understanding—they were used to represent ideas before words and writing were ever conceived. Until the advent of the printing press, writing was the domain of the landowning and religious upper classes. Yet even when writing and printing had evolved and history could be recorded and more widely distributed, images still kept their power. After all, we still subscribe today to the saying: A picture/image is worth a thousand words. A powerful symbol can be totemic.
