James DeWolf’s political career was also successful. He served several terms in the Rhode Island legislature, and in 1820, he won a seat in the US Senate, where he served until 1825.

Some people have never forgiven James DeWolf, a man who reportedly wallowed in a pile of gold on the floor of his mansion. His grave was vandalized so often that his relatives had to remove his tombstone to conceal his whereabouts.

The Ohio River was a popular route for families to move to St. Louis and start a new life. In 1962, a movie was made about the settling of the American West, and how river pirates would trap families and rob them.

Samuel Mason was a criminal who served in the Revolutionary War and settled in Pennsylvania. He began his career as a river pirate in the Ohio River settlement of Red Banks, in western Kentucky.
