Summary of One Child - . IRB Media
Overview
One Child provides a compelling personal and journalistic examination of China’s infamous one-child policy. Tracing the policy back to its inception, One Child illuminates the myriad impacts it has had on Chinese society—and the dangerous implications it has for the nation’s future growth and well-being.
When in 1980, China’s Communist Party issued a request to its citizens that they voluntarily limit their family sizes to one child only, Chinese citizens understood that this was an order and not an invitation. Over the years, China took brutal measures toward enforcing this quota: requiring late-term abortions, imposing mass sterilizations, and slapping violators with devastating fines.
However, the enforcement of the one-child policy may be the economic downfall of the country it was meant to strengthen. With an ever-growing population of elderly Chinese and not enough workers to replace them, the country is facing a massive crisis. Today’s married couples often are burdened with supporting four grandparents and a child of their own simultaneously. In addition, the state is running out of financial options to support the substantial health needs of its aging population.
