Chapter 1 - Greek Mythology
The mythical stories of ancient Greece have an enduring power that has allowed them to survive from long ago in around 900 B.C. and be re-told countless times until today. It may come as a surprise to most people that many of our beloved contemporary literature, films and shows are simply re-tellings and adaptations of these stories. The names, settings, situations and plots may change, but many of our stories can trace back their roots to Greek Myths.
We continue to discover these tales of heroic adventure and divine folly from Greek literature and art. Literary sources that many are familiar with would be the epic poems of Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey. Other sources are Hesiod’s Theogony, which gives the most complete account of Greek creation myths, the origins and genealogies of gods, Titans and Giants, and other folktales. Hesiod also wrote Works and Days that includes the tales of Prometheus and Pandora, which you will encounter later in this book. Aside from poetry, Greek drama was largely inspired by myths. Theater plays were often offered to the gods and performed during sacred feasts. One of the world’s greatest tragedies, Oedipus, is also found in this book.
Archaeological sources have also uncovered these myths that would otherwise have been lost to time. They also help in elaborating and answering some questions that have been posed based on the literary sources. Many Greek artefacts show representations of deities and events from mythical tales told in the oral-poetic tradition. Western art throughout the ages has also been largely inspired by scenes from these tales. The two most major archaeological finds are the discoveries of Heinrich Schliemann in the 19th century and of Sir Arthur Evans in the 20th century. The evidence found in the unearthing of the Mycenaean civilization and the Minoan civilization, respectively, provide us details about deities, heroes, rituals and practices of the ancient Greeks.
The history of the world as told in mythology can be classified into three periods. The first is the Age of the Gods from the beginning of time and the creation of the world and humankind. The second is the Age of Gods and Mortals when men interacted with deities, also resulting in demigods. The third is the Age of Heroes where the focus is more on the acts of men with some divine intervention.
The study of Greek Mythology is significant because it sheds light on the political and social milieu of ancient Greek society and of this particular period in our history. It also helps us understand the nature of myth-making and recurring themes in our tales that date back centuries ago. They illustrate how people look at the world around them, its origins and creations, and explain occurrences they encounter in their life like death, war and disease, and even more beautiful situations like birth, marriage and love.
Chapter 2 - Greek Gods
Hellenistic religion is polytheistic where the ancient Greeks worshipped many gods. It is also animistic
