DONALD J. TRUMP, PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE
"Donald Trump is especially unprepared to be president. He has no realistic policies, no advisers, no capacity to learn. His vast narcissism makes him a closed fortress. He doesn’t know what he doesn’t know and he’s uninterested in finding out. He insults the office Abraham Lincoln once occupied by running for it with less preparation than most of us would undertake to buy a sofa. – David Brooks
Donald Trump does not want to be president. I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters.
This statement made by the Republican presidential nominee, Donald Trump, during a speech in Sioux Center, Iowa is one of many absurd, violent, racist, sexist, and xenophobic statements that is an indicator that he does not really want to be nor deserves to be president. He does not take this election seriously. He has shown a complete lack of depth of knowledge and zero interest or curiosity in learning about domestic and foreign issues. It should be very apparent that he is not interested in the work of governing, which is required for the most powerful position in the world. He wants to win the race but that is not the same as wanting to do the work required of the president.
So when Trump says he wants to win, I don’t believe a word he says. I don’t think he even believes the things he says. Donald Trump is not a Republican; he is a capitalist. Capitalists don’t want to run the government; they want to control the government for their benefit. This presidential run is a means to an end, a business end for Trump. Although an argument can be made that many, particularly on the Republican side have used the presidential elections as a cash cow for some of their other business interests like selling books, movie promotions, and increased fees for speaking engagements. Those candidates have often been weeded out relatively early in the primary season. Trump however, has made it through the primaries, beating out well-established and much more capable political opponents. A former aid to Mitt Romney stated Trump is ’a con man who is shocked his con hasn’t been called (Horowitz, 2016).
There is speculation that Trump had a tremendous amount of debt and bankers were unwilling to gamble with the Trump brand after decades of bankruptcies and failed businesses. Trump has seen some financial gains from running for president. His campaign pays rent for his presidential headquarters located in Trump Plaza, his personal plane is used for campaign travel, and he holds press events at his various venues including his new hotel in Washington D.C. and his Mar-a-Lago estate.
There has also been speculation that his presidential run is about a possible foray into cable or online TV. Out of all of Trump’s business maneuvers, being the star of the hit show, The Apprentice, was one of his most successful. Regardless of your thoughts of him as a person or presidential candidate, he has done something unprecedented in American politics. He has single handedly dominated the media, traditional and social media alike. He has received countless hours of free press, with the media covering his every move and Tweet. He was able to use this free media to blow past sixteen established, and most, more qualified candidates.
He has seen the money made by the likes of Glenn Beck, Alex Jones, and others that have a very specific niche market. There is a strategy in Trump bringing on the likes of Steve Bannon, formerly of Breibart News. Many in the media attempt to whitewash what Breibart and their followers are really about by using the softer term alt-right
or alternative Right. They are even further to the Right and so extremist in their views that they even reject people like Speaker Paul Ryan, which he’s no moderate. The reality is that this entire movement is a white nationalist movement. It is about protecting white privilege at the expense of minorities, immigrants, non-Christians, LGBTQ, and any other groups that they feel are a threat to their heritage. They are anti-Sematic, race-baiting, misogynistic, hateful people that want to drag the country backwards to a day when white reigned. Trump has been able to awake this segment of society and garner the support of racist white nationalist. This would make for a perfect target audience with a new Trump TV. He already has the support of people like Rudy Giulani and Newt Gingrich that have been so willing to toss any credibility they did have to do Trump’s bidding by regularly appearing on news shows to either co-sign Trump’s hateful statements or repeat and justify his lies.
Trump is an unstable man, to put it mildly, and some of his surrogates are lunatics as well. There are examples of staunch Republicans, like Nicole Wallace and Steve Schmidt, that stand strong on their political principles without spouting hateful, irrational, lies to defend their positions. Most of Trump’s surrogates lack a drop of credibility and would not find space anywhere within the confines of the Republican establishment after this election is over. They have consistently attacked Speaker Ryan and the Republican party as a whole. Some of his surrogates are just as unhinged and bat shit crazy as he is. So they should hope to find a home on a future Trump TV.
Trump enjoys publicity. He is enjoying campaigning and the rallies. He gets to call all of the shots. He’s a reality show star. The media eats up all of his antics. The cable news stations have given him hundreds of hours of free air time. According to MarketWatch, as of May 2016, Trump has received the equivalent of nearly $3 billion in free advertising (Schroeder, 2016). The media eagerly covers his rallies just waiting for the next big, shocking, headline-grabbing statement from Donald Trump. He believes all press is good press. He has an amazing ability to drive the news of the day. He has the ability to trample the message of his opponents and even his own message at times.
The media finally turned on Trump and took the kid gloves off, only after they were played by him. He was supposedly going to hold a press conference at his new Trump International Hotel in Washington D.C. and denounce his previous birther statements about President Obama. Instead, he only allowed cameras to follow him for the hotel tour, he blamed Hilary Clinton for starting the birther movement, and he did not answer any questions during the press conference.
