FOREWORD
AS martial artists we all take different paths to the top of the same mountain. We each have our own journey, but we're all trying to reach the same place.
An instructor of mine once told me this. It's a poetic thought, but I don't think it's true. I've been training in the martial arts for over thirty years, and have been teaching for two decades now, and if there is one thing I've come to understand, it's that there are many different peaks that martial artists aspire to.
In the early years of my teaching career I didn't understand this. In my naive mind everyone should have been aspiring to the same thing I was: a complete and total understanding of the mechanics of hand-to-hand combat. Some level of mastery that went beyond the simplicity of style and rank. It was infuriating for me to see that some students saw training as only a hobby. Some simply did it for fun, some wanted to achieve the rank of black belt and then stop, and others had different reasons. Very few had made the lifetime commitment that I had made before I hit my teens: The vow that this would be a part of my life forever.
All of this is to say that this book isn't for everyone. This book starts at a point beyond that ever reached by most martial artists. Without trying to sound too philosophical, this work is about transcendence. This is about looking beyond mechanical and stylistic similarities, and finding common, unifying truths.
Even among those who make the combat arts a lifelong pursuit, some will study for a lifetime and never try to move beyond the dogma of their chosen system. Others, however, will never be satisfied with a singular approach. They'll always be compelled to seek out new and better methods, to test and refine, to adapt and grow. I'm part of this second group; so is Chad. This book is for people like us.
Chad comes from a diverse martial arts background, which he will discuss in depth in these pages. His journey in the martial arts was anything but typical,
often having to seek out unorthodox sources of instruction due to geographical restraints. His unconventional path, combined with his unparalleled dedication, has given him a unique perspective of the martial arts. The concepts and methodology found here are not for beginners and not for the faint of heart. This isn't for kindergarten students, or even high schoolers — this is graduate school!
The eastern martial arts came to the west shrouded in mystery and mysticism. At the risk of offending some traditionalists, a lot of this was just nonsense and marketing, reinforced by movies and perpetuated by unscrupulous teachers. If you take away nothing else after turning the final page, it should be that everything in the martial arts should be quantifiable. There is no need for magic or pseudo-science. Mastery is acquired through hard work, focus, and commitment. The dynamics of violence are governed not by unseen energies and un-testable theory, but by the laws of physics, and the limitations of the human body.
Many senior practitioners will no doubt see this as the book they wished they had when they were sorting it all out.
Advanced practitioners, who are just moving into this stage, will find this to be an instrumental tool in their personal evolution as a martial artist. If this sounds like you, then let go of your preconceived ideas, open your mind, and let Chad's work help you take this next step.
For those a little further on the journey, this book provides a perfect opportunity for you to compare and contrast your own experiences and conclusions; either way, if your fall on the advanced
end of the martial arts spectrum, there is a lot here for you to digest.
In conclusion, I'll forego anything too fanciful and say I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did. If you are ready, then I'm sure you will.

WHEN I first began corresponding with Chad McBroom, it was related to his seeking of martial knowledge. When I met Chad, it wasn’t for dinner, to go for drinks, or to catch a ball game. It was to train non-stop for two days. Since then I have corresponded with Chad on a weekly basis. I can say with certainty that 99% of these conversations were related to martial arts training, teaching methods, and research. Why? Because Chad is undaunted in his pursuit of information related to the combat arts. The man lives a balanced life, dedicated to God and his family, but like many of us, the warrior ways are in the blood, and I know that they dominate every spare moment of his thoughts.
I once commented to Chad that he was a world class trainer. Chad humbly denied this status. I, however, stand by my opinion. When I met Chad, he had been tasked by the Federal government of the United States of America to teach the Nation’s finest how to properly defend themselves and others. That is not a task that is assigned lightly, nor assigned to the unworthy.
I am happy to see that Chad put pen to paper and is willing to share his deep insights with the rest of us. I have had the pleasure of reading his book. Through the scientific understanding of biomechanics, Chad has clearly established what a man can do. Through the analysis of fighting models, Chad helps us to identify why a man does what he does. Through lessons in optimization, Chad has shown us how to do it best.
