Exotic Yoruba Names And Their Meanings #2 - Wale Owoeye
Dedicated to Oyenike – a beautiful name for a beautiful angel
SYNOPSIS TO THE FIRST EDITION
EXOTIC YORUBA NAMES & THEIR MEANINGS #1 is a monograph I made to showcase an aspect of Yoruba culture for global audience. It is a collection of assorted Yoruba names, first names particularly, common in modern cities of South West Nigeria and also among Yoruba people in the Diaspora.
Yoruba people place a lot of premium in naming a newborn. It is a sacred ceremony held exactly eight days after the birth of the child, where family members and relatives gather to witness the formal introduction of the child to the society. It is in this ceremony, performed by elders of the family, that the child’s names are first pronounced to the hearing of the world, to be his or her identity throughout his or her lifetime.
In picking a name, the parents take many things into consideration. Because the Yoruba people believes that a person’s destiny is tied to the name he or she bears, the parents take a lot of thought in naming their child. To do this, they could consider the circumstance surrounding the birth of the child or could decide on a symbolic name. Whichever name(s) is chosen will be the name the child will bear and this will be the identity of the child all through his or her lifetime and beyond.
