    Charisma Secrets - Scott Gover

    Chapter 1 Is Charisma Real?

The Good And The Bad Of A Magnetic Charm

    Is Charisma Inherited?

Charisma is something that anyone can attain, with the right attitude and perseverance. Some argue that charisma is an innate ability that lays dormant without the right environment to trigger it. However, much of your charisma depends on how your character develops in your life, such as how confident you are due to your upbringing. If you have confidence in yourself, you can strive to become a charismatic leader. This goal is easier for some to reach than others. There is evidence to suggest that the characteristics of leadership are linked to our inherited genes.

One such study at the UCL shows that genetic differences influence those drawn to management roles. A certain genotype, rs4950, has been linked to people with leadership qualities. This gene is passed down through generations. Whilst the gene is important, it is not the prime motivator of leadership. Leadership qualities are based on training and skill development (1).

A further study in 2006 also supports a genetic link to leadership. This gene is linked to certain personality traits, such as charisma. Those prone to taking leadership roles may be driven by genetics (2). Cognitive and personality factors are driving forces behind those who have a natural ability to lead. The study suggests that leadership is not only influenced by genetic factors alone. However, environmental factors play an equally important role in leadership skills. This is good news. Even if you don't have the right genetic makeup, all is not lost. With the right environment, dedication, hard work, and training, leadership is available to most people.

    What then is Charisma?

The meaning of the word Kharisma has Greek origins and translates as Gift of Grace.

It isn't so much a graceful gift as it is a skill that can be learned. Charisma is about having the ability to attract those around you, like moths to a bright light. These people will see you as an all-knowing, all-seeing captain, and rely on you to guide them.

Becoming a leader is no easy task, but if you take the time to master the art form of charisma, your popularity will increase tenfold. Your leadership skills will improve, but it is not quite as simple as that. There are other characteristics that you need, such as confidence and empathy. If you don't have such traits in your own developed personality, then you are in for a learning curve.

History has shown us that there have been many charismatic leaders. Such people have come from all walks of life, such as entertainment, politics, and religion. Although, to have charismatic charm does not necessarily mean that you have good intentions.

    Famous Charismatic People

    Adolph Hitler

Hitler had a very charismatic personality that attracted many followers. He was not a likable character and did not have the quality of empathy. This was a man often filled with rage and incapable of forming close friendships.

How then did he manage to have such charismatic charm?

Here are a few characteristics that made him popular amongst millions.

Connecting with people’s fears and convincing them that he had all the answers.

Sharing his personal vision, though it was based on race and hatred. He split people into categories through hatred. This made certain people feel powerful over others. They became convinced that certain people were their enemies and should be eliminated at all costs

His powerful words captured large audiences. Though he was fearful of close relationships, he directed his leadership qualities into the mass of an audience.

Never would he ask for another's opinion. Instead, he would convince others that he was right in his judgment, showing his people how he would lead them forward with his strong beliefs.

He also gave people hope with his powerful, convincing words. They saw him as a dynamic leader. The trouble was if you were in the wrong club and didn't fit into his vision, your life would take a catastrophic turn.

There is no denying that Adolph Hitler was indeed a charismatic leader. Even though he dictated hatred and death to a perceived enemy, certain people loved him. He convinced his followers that they were the saviors of the motherland. His whole demeanor made them feel special because they were wanted and needed. At a time of depression after the repercussions of WWI, this was a compelling message. It's no wonder that many followed his every word.

    Martin Luther King

A man with complete opposite convictions to Hitler. His followers supported him for his belief in equality for all people. Indeed, his intentions were for the good of people, unlike Hitler, who ruled through fear and power. Despite their complete opposite opinions, they were both charismatic characters.

    Mother Teresa

A charismatic woman who spent her life helping the poor and needy. To achieve her goals, she needed to organize and run charitable missionaries. These could not have been successful without funding. Getting support from her work would have been essential in her success. Whilst she was a kind and caring person, she had a strong, natural drive to succeed in her mission in life. That takes a certain type of character who attracts the right people like a magnet. It would have been no easy task, but her sheer determination helped those less fortunate. Speaking five languages, she was a person who could communicate well. Perhaps, for Mother Teresa, charisma came naturally.

Then there are many famous entertainers, such as Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lopez. These are people who can enchant and influence their audience with personality alone. Most famous influential film or pop stars tend to be attractive by the nature of their chosen career. But, it's not about being attractive; Hitler did not bear stunning features.

Charisma is so misunderstood. In 2010, the University of Lausanne carried out a study to find if charisma can be learned (2). Their research concluded that it can be taught, along with leadership skills, though only with the right kind of guidance.

Now we've established that charisma is
