A Holiday to Remember - Crystal Tarling

    Mauritius

So girls, are we doing it? I asked looking around the table at my group of close friends. They were all nodding their heads. OK, so who is going to research tickets and book for us? We can book it on my MasterCard and sort it out later. Mauritius, here we come.  Watch out!

Peggy offered to book the tickets and accommodation. Just imagine! Us girls loose on a tropical island for SIX weeks! She said excitedly. Make sure your passports are ready and up to date!

We all started to plan what to pack and I took out my tablet to make notes.

We have to have at least one decent dress to go out in and I am buying clothes there too! said Libby, I heard they have great clothes there! Abby and Hannah agreed with her. Eve and I just grinned at each other – we know these shopaholics are like when they get going!

You’d better each take an empty suitcase then so you can fill it! I laughed. Eve, that will be when you and I go hiking and they can shop till they drop!

I bet you also shop there, Lexie! You will love the colours they use in their fabrics! Eve bet the others.  As someone who made a living from working with colour, I had to agree, I would buy fabric there – but not clothes, I was happiest in jeans and a T! Their colours and designs would be useful in my interior design business.  I would find suppliers there and import from them directly. Peggy was a chiropractor and her business partner, Eve, was a physiotherapist.  They both did acupuncture at their Noordhoek practice.  Hannah, Abby and Libby worked in the corporate world near one another in the Claremont/Rondebosch area and shared a house.

Over the next week, we spent planning various trips on the island to their sugar cane fields and factories and leisure time laying on the beaches and snorkelling. I wrote out a full itinery for at least 20 days of the 6 weeks, leaving enough time for just wandering around or if we found something else to do.

Peggy brought our tickets to dinner that evening and we all put them in our handbags. So we’re really doing this! I said and we all high fived one another! One week to go for lift-off!

I went over to my sister’s house on Wednesday to make sure she was still able to take care of Inca, my wolf.  My 10 year old niece charged out the house towards me and skidded to a stop when she realised Inca was not with me. Where is she? she demanded. How can you come without her? She is coming here today already isn’t she?

I laughed and ruffled her short hair. We’ll go fetch her just now.  I’ve just come from work and have not been home yet. I assured her. I just want to talk to your Mom first. We went into the house and I hugged Julie.

    Coffee? she asked.

I’d love a cup! I sat in the kitchen with her.

Are you all set for lift-off? She asked.

Rearing to go! Are you still happy to have Inca? I asked her.

Do you really think my daughter will forgive me if I said no? she quipped. Inca is all Tricia can talk about these days!

"Auntie Lex said we could fetch her just
