INTRODUCTION
LECTINS. WHAT ARE THEY?
Lectins, which are universal in nature, are found in many foods, but mostly beans and grains. They are proteins found in high amounts in plants like whole grains, legumes, and some vegetables. In plants, lectins are mainly found in seeds, which happens to be the part most people love to eat. This kind of toxic protein is also found in small quantity in sour cream, eggs, milk, and some other dairy products.
LECTINS NEGATIVE EFFECTS ON THE BODY
Lectins have been known to have both positive and negative effects on health. These anti-nutrients usually bind carbohydrates together in the system, thereby preventing the absorption of some nutrients. They can cause digestion, chronic disease risk, and even cause red blood cells to band together.
If plant foods, like legumes, are eaten without being cooked, they may cause stomach upset. In raw or undercooked kidney beans, lectin can cause kidney bean poisoning in the form of severe nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
Other health problems that are caused by lectins include:
Summarily, lectins that are found in large quantity in foods rich in carbohydrates will make it hard for the body to maintain its cells.
DEFINITION OF LECTIN-FREE DIET?
The lectin-free diet was popularized by Dr. Steven Gundry, a former heart surgeon who later switched to focusing on food and supplement-based medicine. He wrote a book titled The Plant Paradox Cookbook, in which he provides information on ways to avoid lectins, alternative food choices to lectin-rich foods, and a lot of healthy recipes. In his book, he emphasizes the need for people to choose to improve their health and also reduce their body weight at the same time.
The lectin-free diet completely avoids or limits foods that are high in lectin. Such foods include:
LECTIN-FREE FOODS TO EAT
The following foods are highly recommended by Dr. Gundry for people who need to limit the lectin in their diet.
BENEFITS OF LECTIN-FREE DIET
It has been shown by studies conducted that low-lectin diet has a lot of health benefits. Some of these benefits are:
RISKS OF LECTIN-FREE DIET
Studies have shown that lectin, being a restrictive plan, may cut out or limit the intake of many nutritious foods like beans, whole grains, and some vegetables.
Below are some risks that come with going on a lectin-free diet:
HOW TO REDUCE LECTIN FROM FOODS AND EVERYDAY LIFE
Eliminating high-lectin foods completely from your diet can be really difficult. It is therefore recommended that dieters should avoid high-lectin foods whenever they can as they may not be able to do so all the time.
There are some ways to reduce the lectin content of the food we eat. Some of these ways include:
Below are other ways of reducing lectin in your diet but still enjoy them occasionally:
Since lectins have a lot of health benefits, it is not advisable to cut them off completely. The best way to go is to reduce their daily intake.
WHAT TO EAT WHEN ON A LECTIN-FREE DIET
The dietary restrictions of lectin-free diets are not as constraining as they may seem. There are so many delicious foods you can still enjoy that are lectin-free.
The recipes provided in this cookbook are made with lectin-free ingredients that are easy to adapt to. Once you can inculcate this new way of eating, you will be encouraged to stick to it long-term.
