- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Gordon McAlpine's After Oz offers a fresh, bold reinterpretation of the characters from L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz – a tale that’s both familiar and completely unexpected. While McAlpine’s inventive take on Dorothy and the other characters presents a new dimension to their personalities and backstories, the challenge for readers -- especially those fond of Baum’s original work or the 1939 film -- is separating these well-established characters from McAlpine's more modern, often edgier interpretations.
I’ll admit, for the first few chapters, I struggled. The Dorothy who grew up in my imagination from Baum’s book and Judy Garland’s portrayal is worlds away from McAlpine’s version, which is more complex and, at times, darker. It felt almost disorienting -- like finding old friends who had changed in ways I hadn’t expected. But, despite my initial resistance, there was something about McAlpine’s storytelling that kept me turning the pages. The plot twists, the reimagined relationships, and the mysteries layered into this were compelling. I found myself increasingly hooked, eager to discover where the story would go next.
To truly enjoy After Oz, I had to let go of everything I knew and loved about Baum's characters. Once I allowed McAlpine’s vision to stand on its own, I found myself appreciating the intricate world-building and the unexpected emotional depth – kind of like what I tell people when they watch Grease 2 for the first time – you have to look at it as a standalone movie and not compare to the first one. Yes, it’s a challenge to separate the original portrayals from McAlpine's creative liberties, but once you do, this is a story that pulls you in with its surprises and its willingness to take risks.
While I enjoyed After Oz for its creativity and suspense, it’s not a casual continuation of the Oz you know. It’s a reinvention. For those willing to follow McAlpine down this new, twisted yellow brick road, the journey is well worth it. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Wow, after a GREAT starting of the story, then it just became a hodge podge mess of a murder mystery with the Bible being CRAMMED down your throat on every other page.
At 20% the story takes a huge dump right into going nowhere. Why couldn't the author have kept the story of Dorothy's disappearance going.....that WAS the best part. Then it just became a huge letdown.
Sorry, though I wanted to, I cannot recommend this snooze fest.
