About this audiobook
Over the course of two weeks, everything in Beartown will change.
Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about. Everyone has tried to move on, but there’s something about this place that prevents it. The destruction caused by a ferocious late-summer storm reignites the old rivalry between Beartown and the neighboring town of Hed, a rivalry which has always been fought through their ice hockey teams.
Maya Andersson and Benji Ovich, two young people who left in search of a better life, come home and joyfully reunite with their closest childhood friends. There is a new sense of optimism and purpose in the town, embodied in the impressive new ice rink that has been built down by the lake.
Maya’s parents, meanwhile, are caught up in an investigation of the hockey club’s murky finances, and Amat—once the star of the Beartown team—has lost his way after an injury and a failed attempt to get drafted into the NHL. Simmering tensions between the two towns turn into acts of intimidation and then violence. All the while, a fourteen-year-old boy grows increasingly alienated from this hockey-obsessed community and is determined to take revenge on the people he holds responsible for his beloved sister’s death. He has a pistol and a plan that will leave Beartown with a loss that is almost more that it can stand.
Discover what it means to forgive with this “hell of a conclusion to an outstanding series” (Booklist, starred review).
Editor's Note
Warm — and break — your heart…
In Backman’s (“A Man Called Ove”) final installment of the Beartown trilogy, a fierce winter storm forces the residents of Beartown to mingle with their rivals in Hed. Tensions rise, spurned by internal fraud, and a senseless act of violence threatens everything this hometown ensemble has built. In true Backman form, “The Winners” is rich in character development with scenes that will warm — and break — your heart.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a beautiful and heartwarming story that brings out hidden thoughts and emotions. The characters are well-developed and the storytelling is immersive and colorful. While some readers found it to be a bit slow or boring, overall it is a great read and a fitting end to the trilogy. The book has left a lasting impact on many readers, with its tragic yet hopeful depiction of humanity.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The best of human storytelling by the best and my favorite storyteller of our time. Backman mines, excavates, extracts and refines the treasures (and scraps) of the breadth of our souls through his very living (and dying) characters. Thank you Fredrick Backman

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Finished all three books and I really enjoyed this series. I am sad that of course another author has gone and broke my heart but I guess that is what makes a good story.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I love all of his books. What a writer! And I have never heard someone read a book better than this narrator. Fantastic! I wish she would read all the books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I carry all pf your characters in my heart Backman. I only wish i could get more Bobo in this book. It was the perfect closure to all these lovely characters.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great character development. Those characters played out in a wonderful story where the title becomes reality. A great read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So beautifully written. I love Backman's storytelling. These kids... this town, Beartown. All the feels. Hurts but oh wow.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good Read. Not the best in the trilogy but still has the Backman style of knitting beautiful phrases.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I truly enjoyed this trilogy. Sad to see it end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5My mind is so full of the characters and stories it's hard to express what I'm feeling and thinking. One thought: this is part of a series and now I'm going backward, to the first.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I will never forget these three books or the wonderful characters. What a beautiful, yet sometimes tragic picture of humanity
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5what a beautiful book! so many characters are described. The end blowed me away
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Should be ilegal to play with the readers heart this much.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Very involved and lots of characters, but awesome!!!! Book club reccomendation!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This story... the type of story that causes you to close the book after the last page and let it rest in your lap, hands laid gently on top, wistful and melancholy, sad to let go of the characters, hopeful in the lives that will continue their journey in your mind's eye. Immersive, colorful, an emotionally entangling tale.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I think the winners is the most tragic yet the most beautiful and heartwarming than the two former book
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing book. I loved every minute of this book. It brings out so many hidden thoughts and emotions
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/53.0✨ This was my first book in the series, and I was told by many friends that this could be a standalone because he recaps the first couple of books in this 700 page novel. Unfortunately, the recapping didn’t even hold my attention. I was seriously SO BORED! All of the drama unfolded literally within the last hour of the audiobook. If I was going off that alone and some of the character development, I might give this 4.5 stars. It’s too bad too, because I love this author. Teachers always tell you to go with your first instinct. I’m not a huge fan of hockey in novels to begin with… It’s the reason I didn’t pick up the series to begin with. I heard that this was the best one out of the three so I gave it my all. But I almost DNF’d. I then decided to skip forward until about a quarter of the way till the end…maybe even less. The ending definitely nudged it up a notch.
