Muzio CLEMENTI (1752-1832)

As mentioned earlier on, this issue of features a spotlight on the Classical-period style along with an in-depth article: In keeping with Clementi’s style of writing, there’s an absence of dynamics, phrase markings and pedal. The tempo marking has been added as a guide. The hardest thing to master in this elegant movement is the four-against-three polyrhythm, which is visible from the start. Chenyin Li, who plays the piece on the album, has chosen to stress the lyrical and free-flowing nature of the RH melody, rather than going for a strict four-against-three which might sound a bit laboured and mechanical. For guidance on phrasing and dynamics, listen to Chenyin’s heartfelt performance. Nils Frank’s article also touches on how to practise the trills.
