Once upon a time, a fairy king and queen lived in a hidden forest kingdom. They had two daughters, and the elder one was very vain. Her parents called her Narcissa, after the pretty narcissus flower.

Their younger daughter was kind and happy, and they named her Forget-Me-Not, after the little blue flowers that were the colour of her eyes.

Near the palace where they lived was a lake as clear and still as a mirror. Narcissa liked to go there and admire her reflection.

Little goldfish lived in that lake, and Narcissa would sing to them:

“Goldfish, goldfish, tell me where, is the fairest of the fair?”

The fish would reply:

“Of beauteous fairies ’neath the skies, Princess Narcissa takes the prize!”
