BEST OF BRITISH

Ben Harris & Co

The workshops at Gweek Classic Boatyard are situated at the head of the scenic Helford River estuary in Southwest Cornwall, where the yard continues a long tradition of wooden boatbuilding. The yard is best known for building sailing yachts, many of whose lines are inspired by the working sailboats of Britain.

Among recent new-build projects was the 34ft (10.4m) gaff cutter yacht Constance that won our award in 2023 in the Traditional New Build category. Her design is based on the famous Falmouth quay punt, Curlew and she is proving to be a fast, well-balanced boat with excellent accommodation.

Currently in build at the yard is a 23ft (7m) gaff cutter to Ed Burnett’s Itchen Ferry design 110. “She has stunning looks with flush teak decks, hatch and skylight, with a spacious and comfortable elliptical cockpit, she is light to helm with an easily handled rig and two berths, heads and simple galley below, making her ideal for day sailing or long weekends,” says Ben Harris. “It is the second boat we have built to this design, so we have patterned up and are taking orders for more. We also make masts and spars and undertake restorations of wooden boats from rowing dinghies up to 50ft (15m) schooners.

Those with a long memory might be shocked to see Adela on our cover. The yacht was originally built as a gaff cutter in 1903, by Fay & Co, to a WC Storey design. She was bought by a couple in 1992, with a view to restoration at the Pendennis Shipyard
