Although USS Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike has had several incarnations over the 56-year course of Star Trek TV shows and films, the heroic and clever version played by Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has propelled the character into the upper echelon of Starfleet fan favourites. Now, in Season 2 of the series, Pike’s bond with his Number One, Commander Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn), has only grown, the two a model of dual leadership and respect. WHO hailed Mount, 50, and Romijn, 50, on Zoom screen for a chat.
Were you both Trekkies from an early age?
Anson Mount: We both discovered the original series when we were around 7 or 8, the same age basically, and our mothers introduced us both to the franchise. It was literally my make-believe game when I was a kid. So it was not only my introduction to science fiction, but my introduction to storytelling and make-believe. And it’s just crazy to realise that I’m still doing the same thing for a living. I’m not sure if that’s sad or what [laughs].
