I’ve always marvelled at how women with those amazing gel nail talons cope with the basics of life. Doing up jeans, sending texts and – apologies for this – even wiping their own bottoms.
Now though, the government is investigating the dangers of gel polishes, which have been reported to leave people with life-changing allergies that can prevent them from having operations for cataracts, joint replacement or dental work. The chemicals in gel nail polishes can cause an allergic reaction, which can see nails loosen and skin develop a severe itchy rash. Beauty, it appears, really can be more than skin deep.
