The Kobold in the Corner

PART 2

Friedrich lives by himself on a rundown farm. By the chimney sits a wooden carving of a little man. It has been there since the days of Oma Elsa, Friedrich’s grandmother. “That’s our kobold,” Friedrich’s mother told him before she passed away. “He watches over our house and makes our luck good!” Good fortune, however, seems to have passed poor Friedrich by. He has no wealth, no family, no wife. He neglects his farm in favor of helping his neighbors.

One day the kobold tumbles off its perch and crashes to the floor, breaking into splinters. Inside the carving is a tiny man, who springs to life and helps Friedrich set his farm to rights. Friedrich discovers he is the only one who can see and hear the kobold, who after completing each task pronounces, “And that’s how it should be!”

Friedrich’s luck has finally started
