    THE ENCHANTED STAG

    A witch happened to be passing through the woods one day. She saw the farmer chopping wood outside his cottage, and decided that she wanted him as her husband! The witch used a spell to enchant him, and he agreed to marry her.

    The farmer thought his new wife was wonderful, but Gerard and Giselle did not agree! She was mean to them, and gave them only crusts of stale bread for their dinner.

    When the farmer passed away, his children were very sad. One night, Giselle whispered to her brother, “Gerard, we should run away! It may be cold in the woods, but it is better than staying with our horrible stepmother!”

    Gerard agreed, and so the two quietly slipped
