Falling birthrates could be a reason to celebrate

Your leader on falling birthrates was needlessly pessimistic (The declining numbers of children is an alarm bell for western societies, 21 May). The UK has a large population in a small country causing a big environmental impact, but with diminishing means of support. A gradual decline in population is what’s needed to make it sustainable. Fewer children will mitigate the increased dependency ratio caused by more people living longer and automation
