AUDIO TAG EDITOR

Puddletag

Version: 2.0.1 Web: https://github.com/puddletag/puddletag

This program is good news for anyone who still maintains a local offline music library in 2021 (Go on… – Ed). After all, who doesn’t want to leave subscription services behind and enjoy their favourite tunes without third-parties getting involved? Unfortunately, if your music files come from different sources then their tagging conventions may also differ. That’s when we need a decent audio tagger. Puddletag is a versatile audio tag editor with everything you need for music library housekeeping.

Puddletag was designed to work with directories, so you can tell it to load your entire collection (~/Music, say) and carry out all corrections from a single mission-control-like dashboard. The list of tracks looks more like a spreadsheet. Use Ctrl or Shift to select a range of files and then decide what you want to do with them.

It’s simple to make common tag adjustments within Puddletag. For instance, it takes seconds to assign a single artist or album name to several files at once. Of course, more complex actions are also supported. You can turn file names into tags and vice versa, adjust tagging wildcards, auto-number tracks, or remove numbering and so on. Make sure to explore Functions for more advanced scenarios. Puddletag can remove tag duplicates, convert character cases, separate split tags and enables you to run custom regular expressions against a group of files. If you’re unsure about functions, use the Preview mode (Ctrl+Shift+P). This makes playing with Puddletag’s tools safe because the program takes a non-destructive approach with your music files.

It’s also possible to record custom actions for quick access to certain functions. Enable the actions panel (Windows>Actions), press + and give your new action a name. After that press + again to add a function. This technique makes it possible to add several functions to a single action, which resembles the macros concept. You can then assign a shortcut to an action. So, if you’ve got tons of old MP3s with useless tags like ‹Unknown artist›, Puddletag could be just the solution you’re after.
