Each year, around Christmas and leading into the new year, crime statistics spike. Burglaries, anti-social behaviour, drink driving, online fraud, shoplifting, muggings, assaults and domestic violence figures all rise, and experts say the reasons can vary.
The festive season brings more opportunity for criminals to break the law, due (in normal years) to plentiful parties, increased drinking, expensive gifts under the tree, and a deviation from our usual routines to pack into pubs, bars, shops and visit loved ones.
