Thomas Hobbes famously described the state of Nature, the pre-state existence of individuals, as a life that is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short". In treatises published in the 17th Century Hobbes described the daily existence of people, before states were created, as being in a perpetual state of war of all, against all.
