Cholera has returned to Haiti and Agua Pura Para El Pueblo is once again in the battle to contain it. We urgently need your help to continue our lifesaving work! Our teams of young Haitian volunteers are now providing aid to families in remote communities not reached by the big international aid agencies.
Cholera is a water borne disease that is extremely contagious, It produces a terrible dehydrating diarrhea any many people die in a few hours of fluid loss. It is especially deadly in young children. It can be treated by providing re-hydration fluids and antibiotics if administered in time. Large international agencies struggle to treat cholera victims and to provide vaccines to vulnerable communities. Agua Pura focuses on the causes of cholera - contaminated drinking water.
Our Haitian team members are all volunteers and live in cholera affected areas. Their mission is to help rural families to protect themselves from cholera and other water borne diseases by promoting basic sanitation and water purification. They are trained to test the drinking water for fecal contamination and distribute Water Pasteurization devices to kill cholera and other bacteria. This is a more long term solution than vaccination by large aid agencies.
10s of thousands of Haitians have died from cholera in the last 10 years. As families and communities become protected from cholera by practicing safe sanitation and drinking purified water the spread of cholera and other diarrheal diseases will be reduced and deaths of children and adults will go down. There was no cholera in Haiti until 10 years ago and it can be eliminated again!
