Neptune's Fountain

Neptune's Fountain was designed by Cheltenham borough engineer Joseph Hall, and carved by R. L. Boulton in 1892-3. The fountain was influenced by the Trevi Fountain in Rome and shows Neptune, the Rome god of water, holding a trident as a symbol of his power over the sea. The figure of Neptune was based on local labourer Dick Saunders. The fountain is symbolic of the importance of water in the development of the town of Cheltenham. The fountain draws water from the River Chelt which flows below the fountain through a large culvert.
