Church of St James, Shardlow

An early Victorian church in Gothic Revival style, opened in 1838 following the expansion of the village as an inland canal port. At this point a new parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne was created out of the parish of Aston on Trent. There are suggestions that prior to this, services were held in a barge on the canal. The church was funded by public subscription to the tune of £1300.

The church consists of a wide aisleless nave, typical of the period, with a small sanctuary at the east end flanked by a vestry, and a west tower. The style is essentially Perpendicular. Although faced with ashlar, the basic construction is of brick.

The interior of the church is laid out with a mixture of box and bench pews, painted in light-oak scumble. There is a western gallery with a small pipe organ. The area under the gallery has been screen to form a meeting room in which services can also be held when congregations are small. To the south of the sanctuary is an impressive tall pulpit with tester, with a matching small reading desk on the north side.

The church is Listed Grade II; the churchyard railings and gate alongside the main road are also Listed Grade II.
