Calum's Road

The mile and three-quarters of narrow road from Brochel to Arnish is famous because it was built by one man, Calum MacLeod.

Exasperated by dithering and procrastination by the county council he set to with a wheelbarrow, spade and pickaxe and built the road yard by yard over a period of eleven years, with a little help with blasting in one or two places.

Once the construction of the road was complete, the county council agreed to surface and maintain it.

Calum and his brother Charles also built the path from Torran to Fladda, being paid a pittance for their labours by the council.

Sadly, the road came too late to prevent the depopulation of Torran, Fladda and Rona further north, but since its completion a few people have chosen to settle in this remote spot.
