The Toll Boys War Memorial, Port Glasgow
This small First World War memorial is located on an external wall of the red sandstone tenement at what is now 5 Robert Street. This building stands on the site of the toll house which gave its name to the Old Toll district of the town as it was known at that time. The area is now known as Clune Park. All of the Toll Boys were unemployed and spent their days at the Toll House repairing furniture to help others in the local community.
The memorial to the twenty nine Toll Boys who died in The Great War was unveiled on Saturday 3rd September 1921 in front of a crowd of around three thousand townsfolk. The honour of unveiling the memorial was bestowed upon Mr John Lewis (Royal Engineers) of Glasgow, who survived the conflict despite losing both legs as a result of injuries sustained during the battle of Ypres. 2018 update: The building holding the memorial is due for demolition. The memorial was relocated on a new granite Celtic cross in a garden a few metres west in early 2018.
