The Toll Boys War Memorial, Port Glasgow
The memorial to the twenty nine Toll Boys who died in The Great War was unveiled on Saturday 3rd September 1921 in front of a crowd of around three thousand townsfolk. The honour of unveiling the memorial was bestowed upon Mr John Lewis (Royal Engineers) of Glasgow, who survived the conflict despite losing both legs as a result of injuries sustained during the battle of Ypres. Mr Lewis was presented with a gold medallion to commemorate the occasion. You can see the medallion and read more about Mr Lewis and his war exploits on this website Link which was created by fellow geographer Mary Young.
