Church of St Matthew, Normanton-on-Trent
Inside, both arcades are seen to be interrupted by the insertion of the tower. The earlier north arcade has alternating round and octagonal columns, the south arcade entirely octagonal. The nave roof appears to be original from the time of the addition of the clerestory in the 15th century. In the east corner of the south aisle is the remains of the stairway onto a vanished rood loft.
Other items of interest include an old bowl font and a large timber parish chest of unspecified date On some of the arcade pillars, traces of early paint colour can be made out where whitewash has been removed. The east wall of the chancel has some delicate mosaic and ceramic work in the Arts and Crafts style.
The church was restored in 1879. It is Listed Grade II*. See Link
